Quietly impressed

I saw Black Swan a few weeks ago, and it was everything I expected. Good. I wasn't blown away, but maybe that's because I expected "really disturbing, totally twisted." Yes it was somewhat disturbing and somewhat twisted, but not really or totally. Maybe I'm slowly growing out of my scary cat boots. I'm not saying it was bad, no, no, not at all. Just surprised I wasn't more scared. Go see it if you haven't already, if anything just to keep up with the crowd - because that's always important.

P.S. why don't they use this movie poster more?

I went and saw this film last night. For those who haven't been smothered to death by this image yet, the film I'm talking about is Sofia Coppola's Somewhere.

I liked it. A lot. What the hell peeps, why are y'all such haters? Is this going to be a case of Marie Antoinette from a few years back when all people did was hate on it and now it's every alt girly girly's fave film. Huh? Is that what's going to happen? Why did everyone not like it? I thought it was better than Marie Antoinette. No Lost In Translation, but nothing will never be. I honestly think this is my second fave Sofia Coppola film. It was good. I liked that it wasn't as 'beautiful' as her other films have been too. It carved out everything I loved about L.A. too. The hills, the wide barren streets, the colonial Spanish influence. GREAT! Everyone said it was awkward. That it was a lot of the times, but I liked that and besides, I'm no film expert here or anything, but also kind of the point a lot of the time, no? Geez guys, have we all gotten too use to Kanye West video clips that we can't handle actually expenerncing some awkward feeling by pretty much being in it? Instead of swift splicing and editing so we interpert the moment in a few seconds. Hmmm...that's lame dudes.

I will stop talking because I hate people who harp on about something they really have no idea about. But yeah, I really liked it. It was awesome! I don't get the hate.

I could think of nothing worse

than having these two star in the same film. Kiera Knightly has got to be the most painful person to watch, ever! Ever! However Carey Mulligan is giving her a run for her money and is climbing very fast up that chart for me. Urrrrgh! Why do people love her so much? How has Kiera Knightly gotten so many jobs? What lunatic put these two in the same film? Are you trying to make me combust?! I really do not get the hype and adoration around these two, it boggles my mind.

For realz?

Ok so we all know that the new Casey Affleck film with Joaquin Phoenix documenting him trying to break into a hip hop career is coming out soon. I have one question, is this for real? I doubt it...or do I...? I'M SO CONFUSED. It's being discussed as a documentary, but I'm just very, very doubtful. I guess at the end of the day it doesn't really matter if he was really trying to be a rapper. Because if he was trying to be a rapper, that's totally awesome. If he's just pulling our legs, that's even better. It just looks good, I want to see it.

In The Mood For Love

Watch this film! Just do it ok. If you like it, also watch 2046. I first saw these a couple of years ago and loved them. Set in Hong Kong in the 60s. Beautiful cinematography. And the cheongsams, oh the cheongsams...









Yes a lot of pictures, what are you gonna do? My sister got a cheongsam made when she was 18. She's never worn it since, but it was a qusai coming-of-age moment and I remember being very jealous and couldn't wait until my cheongsam day arrived. It never did. What's up with that? I'm thinking about hitting mum about this. But before I do, am I even Chinese looking enough to get one? Sadly I don't think I am. Maybe in say that stripy pattern? Or the blue with the rose print??? Getting one in a less 'oriental' fabric might actually take away some of the cringe factor of a white girl in a cheongsam. Sigh, I don't actually think I can pull it off. Anyway, In The Mood For Love. 2046. Wong Kar-Wai. Do it.

Sofia Coppola's new film. Psyched!

95 minutes of stupid

Am I the only person in the world who thought that 500 Days of Summer was totally bullshit? I think I am. Everyone raves about this awesome, modern take on romance that 'is not a love story' or is a 'real account of love' blah, blah, blah, spew. Are you khu-razy? I think you are, or at least this film is. I was very intrigued and happy when the opening line of the film promised a non-love story as I settled into a dvd night driven slightly by bitterness and a general 'fuck you' attitude to all things fluffy and sweet.

Seriously, what the hell? It's all gooey. It's all about optimism. It's pretty much all about this wonderfully romantic notion of 'fate'. Spew. It was stupid. I felt cheated. I felt like I was dating the film and it went out and cheated on me. I'm pretty sure my mouth was hanging open with disbelife when Joseph Gordon-Levitt meets Autumn and the love counter begins again at 1. No way!

Look I'm sorry. I'm very Oscar the Grouch today, but really. I'm all for a cheesy love story and feeling good, they're great. But please don't package yourself as a fuck you to soppy cliches and somehow find a way to get people to back up that false claim when you're not. Because you were just one big fat cliche 500 Days of Summer.

First Blog in a While

Alejandro Jodorowsky is one strange cookie.His two best known films are El Topo and The Holy Mountain. I watched El Topo first, at the suggestion of the Video Ezy man - he said it was "easier to understand". And right he was. I was not prepared for The Holy Mountain as a starter.. even watching it after El Topo it was still weird and strange but very cool to watch at the same time. However, I recommend El Topo for its cinematography and its easier to follow story line. And its AMAZING costumes. It made me want to dress like a cowboy bandit Mexican gunfighter. Watch out for the use of midgets ( small people?) and amputees, and be prepared for some nudity and very suggestive scenes in both movies.

So The Rum Diary is becoming a movie. Did anyone else know about this? Staring Hunter S. Thompson film adaptation fave Johnny Depp and Giovanni Ribisi. This is one of my favorite books and I am very, very intrigued.

Love and Death (and Napoleon)

Ok, so, Annie Hall will always be one of my all time favorite movies and THE ultimate Woody Allen film (yes I'm painfully cliché...so?). But what also ranks rather highly in both of those charts for me is Love and Death. This film is not only Woody Allen damn funny, but also has some A.M.A.Z.I.N.G bits of cinematography, which is never always the case with Woody Allen - in my humble little opinion anyway. Oh and Napoleon! He's only my favorite tyrant ever!

So someone made an expose film on us...

No seriously. Seriously, seriously, seriously. All jokes aside. As excited as I want to get about this film, it looks fucking dull. Anna Wintour doesn't even seem that mean. I could out mean her without the bob and sunglasses. Bitch please. Maybe they are 'hiding' some of her evil because she doesn't want to come across as the wicked witch of the East Coast and that The Devil Wears Prada was an exaggeration like, Confessions Of A Shopaholic was an exaggeration of me...
Call me stupid, but it's kind of like Bob Dylan. The more I know about them, the less I want to know. I like the idea of mega-bitch Anna Wintour in my head. I don't want to bring her down to my level. I don't want to relate to her, or even think of her as a 'real person'. Jesus, can't a girl have any unrealistic ideals in her head anymore?!

Oh and b.t.w, when is THIS coming out?



This one I'm excited about. Take a leaf out of Valentino's book Ms Wintour, worts and all. Everyone has them, either show em' or get the hell off the big screen.

Westerns are totally awesome!!!

So let's discuss one of my favorite films of all time, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Is it just me or is this film timeless or what?! Am I right? I know I'm right. Sometimes when I sit down and watch old 'classic' films I enjoy them yes, but mostly based on their importance in the history of things. I can put the dated production and acting into context, but it still lingers in my mind throughout the whole film. Try watching Casablanca for example. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but I didn't necessarily ease through it. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, on the other hand, draws me in so much every time that I don't even notice its 'date'. I like the intense acting and the generic Western traditions. Basically, in my eyes, it's freaking flawless! If anything it's one hell of a visual treat; the setting, the cinematography and the costume (oh the costume!) make an A+ combination. But, maybe I'm just partial to barren desert landscapes and a good Stetson.






Oh, and it does help that Clint Eastwood was a total dish. Swoon!
